Description
This dataset contains 73 anthropometric measurements, along with age and race demographic information, for 422 female trainees enrolled at the American Airlines Stewardess Training Academy in Fort Worth, Texas.
Data were collected between February and June 1971. The original sample was reported as 90% White, 8% Black, and 2% Asian (described as “Oriental” in the historical documentation).
Some participant records contain missing values because certain measurements were introduced after data collection began or were not recorded for individual subjects.
Survey Documentation
Complete survey methodology and statistical summaries are available in:
Anthropometry of Airline Stewardesses, Clyde Snow, Herbert Reynolds, and Mackie Allgood, U.S. Department of Transportation, FAA Office of Aviation Medicine, Civil Aeromedical Institute, Report FAA-AM-75-2 (1975).
Clyde Snow supplied the original participant-level data to Anthropology Research Project, Inc. in January 1977.
Data Preservation and Format
Charles Clauser and John McConville preserved the dataset in the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory (AMRL) Data Bank Library. The original records were stored on magnetic tape in a standardized FORTRAN format, including variable descriptions and coding information.
WEAR converted the archived data into an accessible Excel spreadsheet, preserving the survey information and providing measurements in metric units.
