Description

Anthropometric Survey of Gurkhas (1976) This dataset contains anthropometric measurements of 154 Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Army. The survey includes two groups: Hong Kong: 118 soldiers (subject IDs 1–118), measured for 46 anthropometric variables and age. United Kingdom: 36 soldiers (subject IDs 119–154), measured for 60 anthropometric variables and age. Of the 46 anthropometric variables recorded in Hong Kong, 41 were also measured in the United Kingdom, while five were unique to the Hong Kong survey. Survey Background The measurements were collected as part of a series of British Army anthropometric surveys conducted by the Applied Physiology Division of the British research establishment. The principal investigator, C. Y. Gooderson, supplied the data to the U.S. Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory (AMRL). Measurements were taken using the modified Morant method and equipment developed by British military research organizations at Farnborough. Although the survey results were not formally published, the measurement landmarks and techniques are described in: Anthropometry of 500 Royal Armoured Corps Servicemen (1972), N. E. Ince, Susan Redrup, and Jane Piper, Army Personnel Research Establishment Report No. 36/73. Data Preservation and Format Charles Clauser and John McConville preserved the original records in the AMRL Data Bank Library, where they were stored on magnetic tape in a standardized FORTRAN format with accompanying variable definitions and coding information. WEAR subsequently converted the archived data into an accessible Excel spreadsheet, retaining the original survey information and converting measurements to metric units. Dataset summary: Survey year: 1976 Population: Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Army Participants: 154 Survey locations: Hong Kong and United Kingdom Measurements: Up to 60 anthropometric variables per subject, plus age Available format: Excel (metric units)
